As a kid, Francesca always had an appreciation of the outdoors - in fact it’s on her bucket list to visit all the National Parks in the U.S. She has a passion for climate action, the UN SDGs, and would love to make an environmental documentary one day. In high school, she was President of her school’s Free the Children club, which raised $10,000 a year for sustainable development initiatives for communities in Nicaragua and Ecuador and she led service trips to these countries. She also founded the “Global Citizen Initiative” in her high school, which she was able to build her school’s first hydroponic tower garden and spread climate change awareness on campus. Francesca is also a recipient of the Education First 2017 Global Citizen Scholarship, in which she was able to travel to Italy to learn about food sustainability and even helped to design an award-winning prototype that was displayed at Stockholm’s Nobel Museum. At GW, Francesca is the president of GW UNICEF, works as a Community Engagement Assistant for Sustainable GW, and interns at the Council on Foreign Relations in the communications department. During her time in college, she has participated in meaningful environmental service in Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Utah. She has also filmed several mini environmental films that have been selected as finalists in nationwide competitions. In her free time, Francesca loves photography, traveling, singing, and strumming her ukulele. Formerly the Social Media Coordinator for ThinkOcean, she is absolutely ecstatic to now lead the Global Outreach and Marketing Team!</image:caption>

There she is involved in Epsilon Eta, a professional environmental fraternity, where she is VP of communications. Originally from West Palm Beach, Florida, her environmental passion formed as she saw how the polluting of the ocean and draining of the Everglades was negatively impacting her community. Ellie hopes to explore how she can help inform and inspire people to care more about the earth through her art and experiences. Her two minors are anthropology and the history of art, and she hopes to carry what she has learned into her making process. How we live in the environment and how it changes us, particularly how this can be seen through our visual language of art. Outside of artistic and environmental action, Ellie loves a good cup of tea, collecting rocks from her travels, and finding obscure items in thrift stores!</image:caption>

She is planning to double major in Psychology and Marketing. She is originally from the city of lakes – Udaipur, Rajasthan. Meenakshi grew up seeing the environmental changes that have affected several lakes in her town, which makes her sensitive to the oblivious attitude of people to these changes. She believes that even the smallest of efforts can bring the greatest change. She has directed and taken part in mimes and short plays in school, many of which were related to spreading awareness on global issues such as water conservation and reduction of plastic. She stands by the motto that life’s battles don’t go to the stronger or faster person, it’s the person who thinks they can. She hopes to inspire and motivate people to become more conscious of their actions. Outside of ThinkOcean, she loves to dance, watch movies, and travel especially to beaches — enjoying both the calmest moments of soaking up sun and most thrilling moments of when trying out water sports.</image:caption>

She plans to pursue a major that combines her passion for both fields in the future and learn more about what she can do on her part to save the Earth! Growing up as a competitive swimmer, Manda developed a strong passion for the ocean at a young age through the various open water meets and was inspired this past year by her economics teacher, Mrs. Reese, to consciously work towards bettering the environment and planet we live in. Other ways in which Manda strives to improve the world we live in is through social justice and legislative activism. Her efforts regarding issues such as gender equality and mental health are often in partnership with organizations such as Girl Up, a Global United Nations Foundation Campaign that strives to provide equal rights and access to education to girls all over the world, and a personal campaign she is launching called Project DOS. In her spare time, Manda loves going on a run, reading anything and everything, finding new music, and scrolling through Instagram. She also plays the clarinet and works a part time job as a swim instructor!</image:caption>

Although she chose to do multidisciplinary studies, she decided to specialize in political sciences, ecology, and strategies by doing a master's degree at the environmental French applied sciences school AgroParisTech. Her love for the marine world has led her to orientate her professional experiments towards the marine field, first in the oceanographic museum of Monaco to raise awareness about the importance of marine life and especially sharks. Then, after a short experience in an aquaculture farm, she followed with two research internships, one about fisheries management in Tunisia and one about the French Southern territories in the RTPi ApoliMer. Guided by this rich experience, she now plans to work on the implementation of sustainable and resilient coastal and marine management policies considering the social, economic and environmental issues in the applied research field. She believes that environmental resources management cannot be a success without coordination between environment managers, politics, scientists and economic actors. Joining Think Ocean France as regional coordinator follows on from this idea that coordination of actions is necessary to protect oceans while acting concretely for their conservation.</image:caption>

Four years ago I moved to Trento to study for my bachelor’s degree in International Studies, with a focus on the theme of international cooperation and development. There, I became involved in AIESEC (Association Internationale des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques), a youth association present in many countries across the world with the aim of educating on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and concretely contributing to their realization by promoting international exchanges. My interest in sustainability was further nurtured by the semester I spent studying at West Virginia University through a bilateral agreement program: I drew inspiration from that experience to write my thesis about the shale gas revolution and the changes occurred in the international energy sector panorama to the detriment of the environment and - above all - of living standards of people living upon shale basins, analysing the attendant sustainability implication. My passion is singing: I’ve been singing since I was 7!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hello! My name is Asja Gabardi, I am an 23-years-old Master Student in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Bologna. I strongly believe that people's power and actions can play a crucial role when governments are blind and deaf to current and urgent global issues: environmental protection is among those issues! For this reason, I took part to awareness raising campaign on the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the UN in 2015: it took place in Peja, Kosovo during summer 2019. Since then, I wanted to commit myself to the environmental cause: this is why I joined the lively and vibrant group of Italian Think Oceaners!</image:caption>

Born in Italy with Austrian heritage, he doesn’t considers himself Italian or Austrian. Rather, he sees himself as European. Since the age of five, he has been interested in government with participation as a Boy Scout heightening this interest. His motto is “I want to leave this world a little better than how I’ve found it”. Last September he repurposed some old plastic boxes by turning them into gardens, planting tomatoes and basil. He loves to make self-grown and self-cooked Italian dinners and has since decided to enlarge his garden. Nowadays, on his balcony, a strawberry field is growing with kiwis, salad, and potatoes. He sees growing a little farm on the balcony as is an interesting solution to pollution. It is a way to prevent the use of plastics, it’s a way to produce oxygen, and it’s also a good way to relax.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Steven Hawse Emalu — Uganda National Coordinator Makerere University Business School Steven Hawse Emalu is a student at Makerere University Business School in Uganda pursuing Business Administration. His immense passion for the environment was sparked after he saw a woman and her about three-year-old son picking plastic waste from the streets of Kampala to try and win a meal for her family and give her children a chance at education. This inspired him to found an organization called Bottles of Hope in 2019 which creates value for plastic waste through buying it from the collectors at better wages, awarding them redeemable Hope points, and recycling it. This enables the collectors who are termed as the unsung environmental heroes to get better wages for the amazing work they do of saving the environment from choking from plastic waste, restores their hope, and alleviates them from extreme poverty. Steven believes that the best shot at getting justice to the environment is through working with young people who he believes hold the future of tomorrow and they are the vehicle to achieving a safer environment. Steven believes that each person on this planet has a role to play in protecting the planet and we ought to all think global and act locally. He is very excited to be part of ThinkOcean, to interact with like-minded people on the same topic of interest. <image:caption>JULIE YANG - US EXPANSION & PARTNERSHIPS DIRECTOR UCLA C’23 Julie is am a sophomore at UCLA majoring in Environmental Science with a minor in Conservation Biology. Growing up in the Bay Area, she has always been fascinated by California’s vast diversity of plants and animals, which developed into a strong interest in topics like ecology, botany, and sustainability. She believes that for the sake of our generation and future generations, we must be aware of the environmental impacts of our everyday actions and make conscious decisions to reduce our ecological footprint. At school, she is involved in a UC-wide campaign that advocates for a sustainable food system by encouraging more plant-based options and cruelty-free food vendors, among other environmental clubs. Currently, she is also part of an undergraduate research project called Capturing California’s Flowers, which aims to digitize herbarium specimens across the state to assess the impacts of climate change on plant distributions, phenology, and health throughout time. In her free time, her main hobbies are playing badminton and playing piano since those are activities she has been doing since a very young age, but she also loves discovering new music, exploring nature, and hiking.</image:caption>
