ThinkOcean Hong Kong 2020 Webinars
While 2020 has been a tumultuous year for many, it was a year of growth for the ThinkOcean Hong Kong network and its Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) chapter.
As one of the more recent additions to ThinkOcean’s expanding global network, ThinkOcean Hong Kong was able to lay its foundation in CUHK with the help and guidance of other national and regional coordinators in Asia and beyond. It has also recruited a diverse team of university students spanning all years and academic backgrounds, with a shared goal of promoting environmental awareness on and off campus, and advocating pro-environmental policy change.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, many of our planned events and activities in 2020 had to be delayed, and were instead replaced by a three-part webinar series under the Think Forward initiative. This webinar series brought together six guest speakers, ranging from youth environmental activists to professors and NGO directors, to speak about what “sustainability” means in their respective fields, and the challenges facing our environment as we echo the call for a more sustainable and just society. Attended by over 80 participants from 24 different universities around the world, we are very happy to have had the opportunity to contribute to Think Forward.
Our team has also been active behind the scenes, meeting with university representatives to discuss how we can make our campus free of single-use plastics, how we can reduce food waste and recycle cooking oil, and understanding how the university invests in money to make sure they are not supporting fossil fuels or other environmentally-damaging assets.
This year, we hope to continue our efforts and expand our reach on campus and beyond. By collaborating with other organizations in the region, our team has planned to put together beach clean-ups, workshops on sustainable finance and fashion, ESG webinars, and several other initiatives which all serve to make our world a greener, bluer, and more sustainable place for all.
