HKU

ThinkOcean HKU is the second branch of ThinkOcean's Hong Kong chapter. Established in 2021, we aim to be a team of driven, passionate and capable individuals who are eager to unite for a common cause - the protection of our world’s oceans from exploitation, degradation and destruction. Making an impactful contribution to the conservation of Hong Kong’s biodiversity has been our #1 goal right from the beginning, and our focus has largely been on educational campaigns. Post-Covid, we are attempting to organise more in-person events and allow members as well as other interested students to gain more hands-on experience. Hong Kong is rich in marine biodiversity and also plagued by several threats, which we hope to help minimise.

Projects:

  1. ThinkOcean HKU collaborated with ThinkOcean CUHK to organize a beach cleanup and waste segregation at Wu Kai Sea beach.

  2. ThinkOcean HKU organized an educational talk by Andrea Richey, the head of the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, to shed light on the dark side of shark finning and the exploitation of these animals.

  3. ThinkOcean HKU, in collaboration with ThinkOcean CUHK and the Hong Kong Marine Ecological Association, organized a workshop on oyster reef restoration. This was part one of a continuous series that aimed to prepare strings of oyster shells for deployment in different regions of Hong Kong to aid the growth and recruitment of new oyster populations.

  4. ThinkOcean HKU, supported by WWF-Hong Kong, organized an exhibition event on the Eurasian otter species at HKU. The event aimed to raise awareness about the disappearance of these animals and the threats they face. Our team created English-translated versions of the informative posters provided by WWF-HK, and a graduate student at HKU conducting research on this species gave an enlightening talk during the last two days of the week-long exhibition.
