Steven Hawse Emalu — Uganda National Coordinator
Makerere University Business School
Steven Hawse Emalu is a student at Makerere University Business School in Uganda pursuing Business Administration. His immense passion for the environment was sparked after he saw a woman and her about three-year-old son picking plastic waste from the streets of Kampala to try and win a meal for her family and give her children a chance at education. This inspired him to found an organization called Bottles of Hope in 2019 which creates value for plastic waste through buying it from the collectors at better wages, awarding them redeemable Hope points, and recycling it. This enables the collectors who are termed as the unsung environmental heroes to get better wages for the amazing work they do of saving the environment from choking from plastic waste, restores their hope, and alleviates them from extreme poverty.
Steven believes that the best shot at getting justice to the environment is through working with young people who he believes hold the future of tomorrow and they are the vehicle to achieving a safer environment. Steven believes that each person on this planet has a role to play in protecting the planet and we ought to all think global and act locally. He is very excited to be part of ThinkOcean, to interact with like-minded people on the same topic of interest.
He loves to spend his spare time with friends, reading and watching movies, business videos, and making new friends.
